Ingredients (for single serving):

.75 ounce of Effen Black Cherry Vodka

Celebrates Independence Day With Red & White Fleet

Nothing is more spectacular than the San Francisco Bay illuminated with the4^th of July fireworks. Passengers are welcome to enjoy up close views of the patriotic entertainment as well as the city’s night time skyline from aboard Red and White Fleet. Red and White Fleet’s historic ferry boats offer outdoor decks to view the show, as well as indoor spaces to warm up during the cool San Francisco evenings. The original building where the Buena Vista sits today at the corner of Hyde and Beach streets was a boardinghouse until 1916 when the landlord converted the first floor into a saloon. That saloon was named the Buena Vista. (“Good View” in Spanish) and it served as a warm meeting place for hundreds of fishermen and handlers who worked for the nearby Sardine Cannery.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS & SIGHTS BOAT PARADE

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17 AT 6:00 P.M.

The Fisherman's Wharf Community Benefit District will once again join the St. Francis Yacht Club to present the oldest and largest lighted boat holiday parade on San Francisco Bay. More than 75 boats festooned with lights & holiday decorations will parade along the waterfront Friday, December 17, 2010 starting at 6:00pm.

A holiday tradition since 1994, this year's parade will include members of St. Francis Yacht Club, Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Fleet, Golden Gate Yacht Club, and the PIER 39 Marina. The parade route will begin at 6:00 pm just east of PIER 39.

Spectators can get a great view from the walkway along the Aquatic Park, PIER 39 Marina Green, and Crissy Field Beach. Restaurants along the Wharf will also offer a fantastic vantage point as well as traditional holiday menus.

The Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Fleet boats will stay lit until January 9, 2011. After the parade, viewing of these spectacular lights can be seen most prominently on Jefferson Street between Jones & Taylor Streets at the Sportfishing Harbor.

If you've wondered whether Al Capone or Robert Stroud (the “Birdman”) haunt Alcatraz, an upcoming cruise-tour might let you glimpse a specter.

The long-established Red and White Fleet plans to launch a “City Lights Cruise” next month that will depart around sunset. It will cruise along the San Francisco waterfront past Ft. Mason, the marina and the Presidio and then loop around the infamous former prison island, among other sights. It will also cross under the Golden Gate and Bay bridges.

Passengers on the two-hour cruise can enjoy a buffet, live entertainment and a free beverage, including beer or wine. Seating will be both outdoors and inside the heated cabin.

Back in the day, when the Giants moved from New York to San Francisco, they played in Seals Stadium (at 16^th and Bryant streets) for their first two seasons. In 1960, the Giants moved to Candlestick Park (aka "The Stick"), a stadium built on a point in San Francisco's southeast corner overlooking San Francisco Bay. The new stadium quickly gained a reputation for being one of the most inhospitable in baseball, with swirling winds, cold temperatures and impenetrable evening fog. But, it stood its ground when the earth below shook violently during the 1989 World Series with a magnitude 7.1 earthquake during the pre-game ceremonies of Game 3. Eleven years later, in 2000, after 40 years at Candlestick Park, the Giants bid a bittersweet farewell to their old home and relocated to a new, privately financed downtown stadium. Originally know as Pacific Bell Park, then renamed SBC Park. However, since 2006, the Giants ballpark has been known as AT&T Park, and sits on the shores of China Basin (referred to as McCovey Cove by Giants fans). As of this posting, the Giants are one game up against the Atlanta Braves for the National League title.

Head to Boudin Bakery at Fisherman’s Wharf and purchase any of their French bread, plus your favorite beverage. Then, walk across Taylor Street to Fisherman’s Grotto #9 crab stand (outside where they cook and sell fresh crab) and buy the largest Dungeness cooked crab (be sure the crab is heavy as I feel the heavy crabs are the sweetest). Ask for the crab to be cracked – no extra charge - and wrapped in paper. Request a few lemon slices…if you smile I think he will probably give them to you for free….some people like cocktail sauce so if you like cocktail sauce ask for a little container…personally, I just like the crab with a drip of lemon. Don’t forget to ask for an extra paper bag for all the waste. With your picnic in hand, stroll down Taylor Street to Pier 45. There is a roadway between Fisherman’s Grotto # 9 and Pier 45. Take this roadway and go west in the direction of the Golden Gate Bridge. Continue about 300 meters to the waters edge. There you will find a brown building with a bell tower on your left…that is the Fisherman’s & Seaman’s Chapel. Go around that building onto the water side – right next to the building – and stop. You have arrived. Sit down, put your back against the building, open the beverage, open the crab, rip the bread, enjoy the meal and watch the fishing boats entering and departing the historic wharf area. And, please be sure to clean up by putting the trash into the paper bag so that the next person can also enjoy the views of San Francisco.

The driving force behind the San Francisco cable car system came from a man who witnessed a horrible accident on a typically damp summer day in 1869. Andrew Smith Hallidie saw the toll slippery grades could extract when a horse- drawn streetcar slid backwards under its heavy load. The steep slope with wet cobblestones and a heavily weighted vehicle combined to drag five horses to their deaths. Although such a sight would stun anyone, Hallidie and his partners had the know-how to do something about the problem.

Hallidie was born in England and moved to the U.S. in 1852. His father filed the first patent in Great Britain for the manufacture of wire rope. As a young man, Hallidie found uses for this technology in California's Gold Country. He used the wire rope when designing and building a suspension bridge across Sacramento's American River. He also found another use for the wire rope when pulling heavy ore cars out of the underground mines on tracks. The technology was in place for pulling cable cars.

The next step bringing Hallidie closer to his fate was moving his wire rope manufacturing to San Francisco. All that was now needed was seeing the accident for the idea to become full blown…a cable car railway system to deal with San Francisco's fearsome hills.

On August 2, 1873, Andrew Hallidie tested the first cable car system near the top of Nob Hill at Clay and Jones Streets, thus introducing this new transportation system to the world…and the rest is history, as they say. For more information, visit http://www.sfcablecar.com/history.html.
